But the plane had just turned north and continued on autopilot for several hours, followed by news stations and Air Force jets. It eventually crashed in a field in South Dakota, killing everyone on board.

He died in the ambulance before reaching the hospital, from an apparent heart attack. Balbuena was 29 years old.

Heather Farr

Farr was a three-time Arizona high school state champion and won the U.S. Championships in the 1982 Girls Junior Championship and 1984 U.S. Championship. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship and played for Team USA in the 1984 Curtis Cup. She turned pro in 1985 and had a top-3 finish on the LPGA Tour for the next three seasons.

In 1989, at the age of 24, Farr was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her fight was extremely difficult, but she faced it with dignity, humor and optimism. Twelve of her LPGA colleagues were with her at the hospital when she died. Since 1994, the LPGA has bestowed the Heather Farr Player Award to honor golfers "who, through their hard work, dedication and love of golf, have demonstrated determination, perseverance and spirit in achieving their goals as a player; qualities recognized by the Farr so fondly remembered."

Ed "Porky" Oliver

Porky Oliver weighed in at around 240 pounds, which doesn't seem like a lot today (at least in the oversized United States). But by the late 1930s, when he arrived on the professional golf scene, he had grown into a very big man.

Oliver won eight PGA Tour tournaments, including three in 1940. His last victory was in 1958. He was also runner-up at the Masters in the United States. Open and the PGA Championship, but never won a major.

Indeed, at the 1940 US Open, Oliver tied for the lead after 72 holes. But he was disqualified for teeing off in the last roundearly- before start time - before storms approach. Oliver once scored 16 in aPar-3 holeduring the Bing Crosby Pro-Am.

In 1960, Oliver was diagnosed with lung cancer and had part of one lung removed. But the cancer came back. Oliver was named captain of the 1961 Ryder Cup team but was unable to serve due to illness. He died on September 21, 1961 at the age of 45

Horton Smith

Smith burst onto the professional golf scene in 1928-29 with 10 PGA wins, including eight in 1929 alone. He ended up winning 32 times in tournaments now counted as PGA Tour wins.

Even though he had done far less than that, Smith's place in golf history was secured when he won the inaugural Augusta National Invitation Tournament, i. H. the 1934 Masters, won. And in 1936, Smith became the first two-time Masters winner.

Smith's last victory on the PGA Tour was in 1941, but he continued to win regional PGA events into the mid-1950s. In 1957, Smith had a lung removed because of cancer. He died of Hodgkin's disease on October 15, 1963, aged 55.

Willie Smith was part of the famous golfing family of Carnoustie, Scotland. Both Willie (1899) and his brother Alex (1906, 1910) were US Open champions. Another brother, Macdonald, is credited with 24 wins on the PGA Tour.

Willie Smith accepted a position as a professional golfer at the Mexico City Country Club in 1904mexican revolutionerupted in 1910, Smith was literally caught in the crossfire. The country club, as a symbol of wealth, was attacked by the Zapatistas in 1914. Smith was hiding in the basement during the bombing.

He recovered from this hardship and returned to Scotland. But in December 1916, Smith died of pneumonia at the age of 41.

Freddie Tait

Tait was a Scottish golfer and career amateur, but that career ended aged 30 when Tait was killed in action in 1900 during the Second Boer War. Tait twice won the British Amateur Championship, in 1896 and 1898, and had top results finishing third in the Open Championship in 1896 and 1897.

The Second Boer War took place from October 1899 to May 1902 and the result was the annexation of much of what is now South Africa by the United Kingdom. Tait was a lieutenant in Black Watch, the 3rd Battalion of Infantry, Royal Regiment of Scotland, and was killed on 7 February 1900 while leading an attack on the Koodoosberg Drift.

The Freddie Tait Cup is presented to the lower amateur at the South African Open Championship every year.
